getting comfortable with uncertainty

At one point, I remember reading about people who decided to commit suicide; that once they made the decision to end their lives, the day to day agony was gone. They had a plan, they had a sense of certainty, and this gave them tremendous relief and helped them regain a sense of composure. They just needed to know there would be a date and time when the pain would be entirely over.

Why is that? Why is it so many people – ok, maybe just me – opt for decisive behaviour, even bad decisions, in lieu of the uncertainty? Perhaps it’s a Zen lesson lying in wait, while we opt to continue on with the illusion of control. What is it about decisions and routine that some of us find so reassuring?
